John Gall

Helvetica.

Some of the last 10 years’ best book covers are his, and his work has become so ubiquitous and accepted that even one of the landmark books on american book cover design, By Its Cover, bears his graphic signature. At Grove Atlantic, he was the inheritor of Roy Kuhlman’s legacy and he was able to pay due tribute. This is a short film in the Barnes & Noble’s “Cover Story” series, and in it Gall talks with supreme modesty and confidence about his work at his Random House office. Just a tiny embarrassing note: in the list of his favourite fonts, at 2’55”, Futura is set… in Helvetica (no irony meant, I presume).
