“The will to do that…”

Maybe the title quotation from the kurtzian monologue in Apocalypse Now is a bit over the top, but, like Kurtz, and facing this cover from the 1966 Harper & Row edition (designer unknown) of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s Mother Night, I’m left to wonder what happened to the courage and the will of publishers and designers to put forward covers like this one. In a time of prettyfied, uniform and market-friendly cover design, the confrontation and challenge to the reader’s eye is more and more unwelcome, which, judging by the evidence, was not the case in the 1960s, not even for a mainstream publisher like H&R. Between the horror and the childish prank, here’s a cover that would give nightmares to many a marketing department.

  1. Wow–what a creepy and very effective cover. Horribly compelling!
