Vi, pela primeira vez, este cartaz numa pequeníssima reprodução no Thames and Hudson Dictionary of Graphic Design and Designers, há uns bons anos. Trata-se de um de muitos cartazes que Gunter Rambow criou no final dos anos de 1970 para a editora de Frankfurt S.Fischer. Com os restantes da série, constitui uma das melhores expressões da beleza e da elegância do livro como objecto que vi até hoje (em especial, do formato “clássico”, em capa dura com sobrecapa). Rambow fora aluno de Hans Hillmann na Hochschule de Kassel, e alguns dos cartazes que Hillmann criou para a distribuidora Neue Filmkunst Walter Kirchner nos anos 60 e 70, com o seu trabalho cuidadoso na manipulação de fotografias, na tradição das fotomontagens modernistas (veja-se o cartaz de 1964 para Por um Punhado de Dólares de Sérgio Leone – Prova A), iluminam perfeitamente a linha estética que Rambow decidiu desenvolver a partir do contacto com o mestre.

Do portfolio completo desta série para a S.Fischer, escolhi alguns que, apesar da distância temporal (e da sobrecarga de imagens “compostas” após a chegada do Photoshop nos últimos 20 anos), me parecem ainda espantosos de invenção, consistência formal e perfeição de acabamento.
GUNTER RAMBOW: THE EXTENSION OF THE BOOK
I first saw this poster in a tiny reproduction in the Thames and Hudson Dictionary of Graphic Design and Designers, many years ago. It’s one of many posters Gunter Rambow created for Frankfurt’s publishing house S. Fischer in the late 1970s., and, along with the other posters of the series, it is undoubtedly one of the best expressions of the beauty and elegance of the “classical” book format, hard backed and dust jacketed. Rambow had been a student under Hans Hillmann at Kassel’s Hochschule, and some of the latter’s posters for the Neue Filmkunst Walter Kirchner film distribution company in the 1960s and 70s, with its skilful handling of photos, in the modernist tradition of photo-montage (see the 1964 poster for Sergio Leone’s For a Handful of Dollars – A), shine a clear light over the aesthetic path Rambow decided to trod since his contact with the master.
From the complete portfolio of this series, I chose only these, which despite the distance in time (and the composite imagery overload after the arrival of Photoshop some 20 years ago) still look amazing in their invention, formal consistency and seamlessness.
