Dois livros de outros tantos bastiões da literatura inglesa da era vitoriana produzidos e postos à venda recentemente. Tanto no livro de poemas de Tennyson (traduzidos e seleccionados por Octávio dos Santos) como no das crónicas de Thackeray tenho a agradecer, respectivamente, às editoras Saída de Emergência e Guerra e Paz a liberdade que me concederam para, além do design da capa, poder pesquisar e editar as imagens que acompanham ambos os textos: no caso de Tennyson, as gravuras de Rossetti, Burne-Jones e outros notáveis membros dos Pré-Rafaelitas que ilustraram algumas edições dos anos de 1840 e 1850; no caso dos Snobs de Thackeray, as caricaturas e esboços do próprio autor que foram publicadas no e pelo Punch em 1848, e ainda alguns desenhos de uma edição “pirata” da Chatto and Windus feita logo após a morte do autor, Thackereyana (1875).
VICTORIANS
Two books from two of the Victorian era’s most solid bastions in the English letters, recently produced and marketed. Both in the case of Tennyson’s book of poems and in Thackeray’s biting chronicles I have to thank their publishers (Saída de Emergência and Guerra e Paz) the freedom they have put in my hands to go beyond cover design and type setting and have a go at researching and editing all the images that go with the texts: in the former, the engravings by Rossetti, Burne-Jones and other notable Pre-Raphaelites who illustrated Tennyson’s poems in the 1840s and 50s; in the latter, Thackeray’s own cartoons and sketches that were published in and by Punch in 1848, and also some drawings from Thackereyana, a sort of “bootleg” edition from Chatto and Windus (1875) published right after the author’s death.

I especially like that ‘Snobs’ cover: it promises both comedy and something much darker.
Indeed. Thackeray can be quite dark, especially when dealing with the less pleasing aspects of Victorian society (the lonely and wrecked lives of some of those people), and even when being very funny he can be brutal.
I intended to give a more playful use to the O letter, and set the whole word SNOBS in white, but sometimes you have to compromise.
A capa para o Thackeray… também magnífica, Pedro. Como não podia deixar de ser… E ainda não vi o interior do livro!
Olá Octávio. O interior é menos variado do que o do livro do Tennyson, mas compensa isso com a qualidade de algumas das caricaturas e desenhos do Thackeray. A ver se consigo colocar em breve no post algumas imagens do miolo de ambos.
